This is where we used to live.

While we’re finding a new home in Buenos Aires and getting settled in, here’s a video I shot last week of our place in Cusco. We spent two great months there (well, they weren’t always great but at least they were interesting) and we’ll have lots of memories of this weird little apartment forever.

Cusco’s dog situation

Cusco’s dog situation

I love dogs – I mean really love dogs.  I wasn’t so much a dog person growing up, but as soon as I got my own dog, I was head over heels.  In fact, if I could come back to life as any animal, it would be one of my dogs – talk about living […]

I love learning but I hate making mistakes.

I love learning but I hate making mistakes.

Learning another language isn’t necessarily difficult. Sure, there is inevitably a laundry list of grammar rules, and don’t forget the hundreds (if not thousands) of vital vocabulary words you need to understand the simplest of commands or directions.

A traveler’s manifesto, Part 3: To Grow

A traveler’s manifesto, Part 3: To Grow

It’s ironic that we as humans are creatures of comfort, but it takes stepping outside of those safe boundaries and flirting with challenges to help us grow and develop into more knowledgeable, capable beings. However, not everyone embraces opportunities to grow because these are often synonymous with “change,” [...]

Landing, settling, adjusting

Landing, settling, adjusting

First, our apologies on the long gap between the last post and this one.  However, getting settled in a new country and trying to find internet has given us plenty of stories and photos to share. We’ve been in Peru for a little over two weeks now, and it’s taken a while for us to […]

24 Tips for a GREAT Yard Sale

24 Tips for a GREAT Yard Sale

Inspired by fine folks like Adam Baker and Leo Babauta, we recently had a yard sale in hopes of decluttering and downsizing our “stuff,” with the side benefit of making some money for the trip.  We did quite well, despite the rain, and after having several friends ask me for advice when they have a […]

A traveler’s manifesto, Part 2

A traveler’s manifesto, Part 2

When J first suggested a trip like the one we are leaving on exactly six weeks from today (!), I have to admit that I freaked out a little. It was right after we watched Into the Wild, which is a dramatized version of the adventures of Chris McCandless, a young man who gave up […]

A traveler’s manifesto, Part 1

A traveler’s manifesto, Part 1

Manifesto sounds so political and official, but as it turns out, it’s just a way to publicly state your intentions, objectives, or motives. I figure this is the best way to share our “perfect” answer to the question we’ve already been asked more times than I care to count: “Why are you doing this?  I […]

The fine print of cheap airfare

The fine print of cheap airfare

So, we’re officially booked!  We will be flying to Lima on  Wednesday, August 11 (after what I’m sure will be an interminably long layover in Ft. Lauderdale, of all places!), spending the night in a hotel, taking a 21-hour bus ride from Lima to Cusco, and we’ll finally arrive in Cusco Friday midday or so…I […]

Gearing up (literally)

Gearing up (literally)

J: So, what shoes are you taking on the trip?

Me: I don’t know.

J: What about pants? Do you have what you need?

Me: I don’t know…haven’t really thought about it.

J: When do you think you’re going to figure it out?

Me: Not sure.
